John G. Bruce was the postmaster for 16 years in Burnside. Most of the town was destroyed by a fire in 1881 but the mansion and general store were spared from the flames. I live about 10 miles from this place. It’s called the Bruce Mansion and was built in 1876. From the bit that I read, the first person to die in the home was Cynthia Smith in 1921 after becoming ill with a fever.
